Music in the Episcopal Church can be as diverse as its worship services and our hymnal draws all Episcopalians together musically in the same way that the Book of Common Prayer draws us together in prayer and liturgy.
Most recently revised in 1997, The Hymnal and Supplement of the Episcopal Church offers 906 hymns in addition to service music. While some of the hymns date back to monastic chants, the hymnal offers more modern music as well. In addition to The Hymnal, St. Francis draws on other resources to complement various liturgies throughout the year such as our Celtic-inspired Evening Liturgy. And, from time to time, we have other musicians visit us to share their gift of music including the Ladies of Lee. We find that music is one way to draw close to God during worship.
In addition to the organ, piano, harpsicord and harp, St. Francis has been blessed with the gift of a carillon. Our carillon is one of only 183 such instruments in all of North America. It is a traditional carillon meaning that its 27 bells are directly hand-played with nothing electric. Traditional carillons can produce loud and soft notes and thus express music whereas electrically-played bells always are struck at the same volume. This beautiful instrument was given by William "Bill" Barger, our former Music Director and Organist, in memory of his mother, Linnie M. Barger.
